As summer comes to a close and the girls prepare to start school this week, I thought I’d share some of the things we’ve been up to the past few weeks. And please … if you think you lucked out of seeing my thousand-some photos of Ireland … think again my friends! I will be boring you with those later this week.

Anyhoo.

We were supposed to go on a camping trip last week, but I begged asked CJ to let us just stay home and chill. He agreed.

And although we’ve had some activities in these few weeks … we mostly have been pretty chill. And peaceful. Exactly the feeling I wanted to get out of this summer.

I’ll start off with mention of a fun afternoon with this sweet friend and her kiddos coming up to visit and swim with us for the day. And would you believe we didn’t take a single photo!?

And … remember these little guys? This summer, we turned our garden into a turkey-growing-pen … and then had a turkey-release-party to let them go into the wild. We live on a lot of acreage and actually have other wild turkeys {naturally} on the property. Anyway. That was 3 weeks ago and they still won’t leave. They sit right outside our windows and doors … I’m certain if we invited them to, they’d gobble strut right in!

Do you remember this post? Well … we had this event a few weeks ago and it was nothing less than amazing! I feel truly honored and blessed to have been a part of it. A Friend in Need is an organization raising money to help an AIDS stricken area in Africa. There are 63,000 orphans living on a mountain in the Swaziland area. 63,000!

The founders of AFIN used some of their images from Africa showing the poverty and desperation … and next to it was one of my images, contrasting the image from Africa. It really helped tell the story. We had an incredible turnout, raised amazing awareness, and were blessed by the funds received.

I can’t wait to see how God uses me next in this ministry … which just may include a photo session in Africa! ;)

Next up … a lemonade stand! The girls woke up one morning asking if they could have a lemonade stand. I gotta admit … I was so not in the mood, but agreed anyway! And as per usual, I’m so glad I did. The girls “designed” the stand by themselves, complete with a bowl of lemons and flowers.

We live on a pretty busy state road/highway, and it was nearly impossible to get people to stop. Can I make a plea to y’all? If you ever see a lemonade stand … please stop! The girls were waving, hollering, holding up lemons … it broke my heart to see car after car just drive by. Some would honk, some would wave, but most drove by.

We had maybe 5 people stop … we charged .50/cup … and the girls made 19ish dollars. Math doesn’t quite compute? I let them use my change jar to make change … so someone would give them a 5, they’d put it in their profit jar, but take the 4.50 change out of my jar. Yeah … I’m sweet like that!

But the best part? The girls donated their profits to this worthy cause! So proud of them …

We didn’t end up doing too much crafting this summer … but something we did do and are in love with, are these little prayer books. We had a linkup at MODsquad recently asking our readers how they teach their daughters to pray. One particular linkup caught my eye and I couldn’t wait to do it with the girls.

I also really liked this post in using the letters of PRAY to help guide the girls as they’re praying.

We still have lots of pages to fill and I think this prayer calendar is the perfect next step for us! But for now, they filled in some pages with people they want to pray for or requests they have for themselves {ahem … daddy, looks like one of your girls wants a horse!}. You can download our printout here {sorry, girl colors only}.

I’m also excited to put together my own prayer calendar … I think it’ll really help me combat the weariness I talked about here.

I think one of my highlights of the summer was this s’more fest and outdoor movie night. Have y’all seen these giant roasting marshmallows? They’re almost as big as the candy bar!

We were all cuddled in pj’s and blankets, watching the movie … as it got dark and the 4 year old fell asleep in my arms … I couldn’t help but thank God for blessing me. The smell of Off and smoke in her hair as I gently kissed her head. The Big Dipper above us … the kindling embers behind us … if that’s not a feeling of peace, I’m not sure what is.

One sad end of our summer, was the loss of our beloved Ariel. We got her as a fluffy {Newfoundland} pup … Taylor was just 4 year old. Her breed is known as the “gentle giant” … and that described our Ariel to a tee.

Ariel was the sweetest girl … she loved water, she loved our girls, and she loved her sibling dogs {we have four others}.

She’s been sick the past couple of years and extremely thin. We just couldn’t keep any weight on her. We found out this past summer that she had had some kind of parasite in her system, but we never knew about it. It ended up being something we couldn’t get rid of. That wasn’t necessarily the cause of her death, but I think it certainly was a factor. The last couple of weeks Ariel had gotten weaker and weaker. And the last few days, she could get up anymore or move. We talked to Taylor and decided it was the best thing to let her go. It all seemed to happen so quickly. We decided around 4:00 Friday night and by 5:00, it was done. We were able to have a vet come to the house … God forbid, but if you ever find yourself in that place, I wouldn’t recommend it any other way.

We fed the girls dinner and turned on TV. They were occupied, so had no idea what was going on. We went around to the other side of the house and had Ariel outside. We prayed over her {at CJ’s urging} and held her as they administered the injection. Ariel was terrified of storms, and just as she was passing, thunder clapped in the distance {honest}.

We told the girls the next morning and planned to bury her in the yard. They didn’t want to see it happen, but we all went out and said a prayer at her burial site.

Yesterday morning, I brought the girls into church with me {they’re usually in their own classes} and when a call was made to come up for prayer, the girls wanted to go up and pray for Ariel. And last night at prayer time, Hunter informed me that we’re going to pray for Ariel every night from now on.

Just another sweet reminder of the power of prayer and faith. I couldn’t be happier that my girls have that foundation to stand on.

Sweet Ariel … we’ll miss you girl …

We’ll be heading south of the border for a little R&R, and not sure how much I’ll be blogging while gone.

It’s funny … I always feel a little like I’m letting my “readers” down when I don’t post for a couple of days. And had recently expressed that to my sister … fully expecting her to say, “oh no, you don’t have to post everyday.” Instead she says, “I know … I always feel a little sad when you don’t have a new post.” Thanks sis!

Anyway. That being said, I may check in here and there … but that’ll just be bonus right? ;)

Merry, Merry Christmas everyone! And if I don’t check in before New Year’s … I wish you the happiest and most blessed ever!

We’ve decided to take a family sabbatical to Exuma {in the Bahamas}!! I am beyond excited … it’s been a dream of mine for the last twoish years. I finally decided, we. are. just. doing it! Enough with the excuses!

You could do a category search here on my blog {there are too many to link} to learn all about the treasures Exuma holds for me.

How long you ask? A whole month!!

And as you can see … it’ll only cost us $8 smackers! :)

When Wynter had a travel unit at school and came home with her “ticket” … I thought it’d be the perfect opportunity to share my news with y’all!

As excited as I am … I’m feeling a tad nervous as well. You know in that “the thrill is gone kind of way?” No? I’m being silly you say?

I know … but let me explain.

There is nothing to do there. Nothing. The place is deserted!

Sounds like heaven you say? Well, true, it is. And there is nothing better in the world than spending time there … in paradise. For a week.

But for four?!? Will we get bored? All over each other? Cranky? Homesick? Sunburned? ;)

{rainbow from the dock by the house}

I’ve talked to all the girls teachers and they’re all on board. In fact, I have an on-slaught of teacher conferences starting shortly and we’ll be going over everything we’ll need to work on with the girls while we’re gone.

I seem to always have the best intentions … which seem to always find their way to the wayside.

But my intention is to spend every morning after breakfast doing “school.” I’ve already brought down some educational games and things we’ll need. And I’ll be heading back in a little over a month and plan to bring some more things down.

I feel super blessed at this opportunity. I know, and don’t take for granted, how blessed we are.

My husband’s family has had a house here for the last 20some years. My husband also works mostly from home. I’ve sold my business. The little girls are … well … little. Taylor’s school is super understanding and allows for online work.

How can we not take advantage of this opportunity?

Tell ya what? I’m grabbing it by the horns and running with it! You would too … :)

And I can’t wait to tell you all about it … share my little piece of heaven with you.

{view from our backyard}

But for now, back to reality. Although, not that mundane! Miss teenager and I are off in a few hours for the bright lights, big city of NYC. A little mommy-tay-tay get away … can’t wait!

Happy, blessed weekend to you all!

It was our turn to get behind the lens! I’d been fretting for weeks about what we’d wear to our session {I promise to post on my yummy finds soon!} and couldn’t wait for it to get here.

I enlisted Marianne Drenthe of Marmalade Photography to come up for a visit … we headed over to the property I’ve been photographing at this summer and had a great time capturing memories that, I know, will last me forever!

No pressure … but she finally posted a sneak peek on her blog and I had to share asap! :)

Do you love my babies?

I read about the DoGood application here and thought it’d be a great opportunity to get the kids thinking about ways to help others and … well … do good.

Everyday there’s a different task, and once you’ve completed it, you check off that you’ve done it. The application measures how many others around the world have done the day’s task and let’s you know.

It also gives you the opportunity to facebook, twitter or email that you’ve completed the good deed.

Some of the tasks are super easy {like the hugs below}, while others are harder … discouraging someone from smoking.

So far we’ve all been enjoying it and my hope is, it’ll instill in the girls to randomly remember to show acts of kindness to others {even when not being told to by an iPhone application}!

Go ahead and join the DoGood movement … you know you want to! :)

Guess who’s birthday?

And was it wrong to take the girls to Walgreen’s to get his gifts? Seriously.

He’s impossible to buy for! The last couple of years, I’ve given him paintings of one of the girls and myself {the first year was Wynter, the second year was Piper}. But this year … nothing. Plus, I’d been traveling and suddenly on my {very delayed} flight home, I realized I had nothing planned for his birthday. He’s totally the guy that doesn’t want any gifts … doesn’t want anything planned. But that doesn’t sit so well with me. Also, I think it’s important that the girls learn the gift of giving and celebrating.

I got home around 5:30 last night, and off we went to Walgreen’s. Anyone that knows CJ, knows he loves his candy! His girls know him well and all picked out candy. Except Hunter, who picked out a large, felt covered rose. Hmm …

After we opened gifts this morning … it was off to big day at school. It was Hunter’s trial day at her new school {where she’ll be attending in the fall}. Just a half day and she loved it. Wynter was a great big sister and helped her out the whole time. When I came to pick her up, Hunter was crying she didn’t want to leave and Wynter was crying that she wanted to come home. Can’t win, can we?

Hunter will be in the same class next year that both Piper and Wynter were in. I love that …

Then after school, we headed to Jose’s for a birthday dinner. In case you’re counting kids in the photos … we had Wynter’s best buddy along for the celebration.

Okay … and do you know my husband? Cuz if you do, you know he was NOT happy when he heard the maracca’s coming and the waiters singing! Ooo, but what’s this I see? A smile? Maybe he liked it a little bit after all! ;)

After dinner, it was time for home and cake!

And I needed to include this shot of Piper. It was her first ‘big girl’ phone call and absolutely precious to watch and listen to! Oh the joy that awaits me, huh?

Happiest of birthday’s and happy anniversary my love. Thank you … thank you for loving me, thank you for loving our family, thank you for all you do.

The ladies in our house all have strep … mama included! Curt got home last night and is pretty sick too … not sure strep has got him yet.

Then Taylor texted mid-day to say that she visited the nurse and has strep too. Unfortunately, the baby was sleeping and I couldn’t go get poor Tay. She said she’d stick it out and I called for meds.

Yesterday, I woke with a sore throat and hoped against all hope that it wouldn’t turn into more. But it did {self-diagnosis, but still …}. My glands are so swollen, I look like Mr. Thick Neck. And they hurt. And my throat hurts. And my body aches all over. And I have a fever. And I have a headache. And I don’t want to go to work today. But I have to.

Anyhoo.

The three little girls were home with me yesterday and we had a pretty nice time. Besides the fact I could’ve fallen asleep in the middle of lunch!

And why is it when kids are sick they still ooze energy from every pore? Not fair.

The girls and I worked on goodie bags for their class parties tomorrow {of which they’ll miss because we’re heading out of town}. We had a great little production line going, and even the baby helped. We packed up some 45 favor bags … whew!

One of the ‘goodies’ was a miniature connect four game. So Piper and I played a quick game between filling bags. I get all my favor bag stuff from Oriental Trading … super inexpensive and they have everything under the sun!

Before lunch we went outside for some fresh air … it was gorgeous out!

And lastly, we did do this! I should admit … I did it, but the girls seemed impressed with my creative abilities … okay, so really they were sitting on the couch and could’ve cared less what I was creating … but Curt seemed impressed {honest}.

I told the girls we were going to make an apple pie for dad and showed them the cute little boxes and thought they’d be all over the project. I was wrong.

Piper: But dad doesn’t like apple pie.

Mom: He doesn’t?

Piper: No one in our family likes apple pie.

Mom: Really?

Piper: Do you?

Mom: No.

Piper: See? No one in our family likes apple pie.

I sure hope the girls teachers like apple pie, cuz they’ve got some coming their way. Didn’t these turn out cute?

I pray this post finds you all with warm Christmas memories in your hearts! {Should I try my hand at writing greeting cards?} :)

We had a great Christmas, we really did. As always, Skye & Odinn come over early Christmas morning to open presents with us. The girls were up late Christmas eve, so the baby was sleeping in big time and we had to wake her. Even Miss Teenager was up before her!

Everyone loved their gifts. I was especially proud of the shadowbox I worked on for Taylor. Her {early} Christmas present was the Jonas Brothers concert and meeting them. I knew she wasn’t getting much else for Christmas and saved {and took from her} some memorabilia from the concert {our wrist bands, tickets, etc.}. I mounted the memorabilia and some photos into the shadowbox and wrapped it for Christmas. I think at first she thought it was a tad lame, but I think she realized how hard I had worked on it {and how happy I was to give it to her} and she came around to the appreciation side. :)

The little girls got Leapster’s for Christmas and they have been the ultimate hit! Well, those and the praying mantis eggs that Curt got them.

I loved the girls matching jammies so much that we had a jammie day … as we went to my mom’s for lunch and then later to GrandGene’s house for Christmas dinner with Curt’s family. Everyone complimented the outfits and I had fun telling them the girls slept in them the night before {cuz their pj’s and all}.

This morning had us up early packing {yeah, I never got my packing done}, taking baths, retiring the Christmas jammies … and heading to Mexico!

The hotel we’re at is pretty cool. I was uncertain when we got here, as the lobby was a little shady looking … I truly felt horrible for being “spoiled” and even scarier was when Piper asked what our room was going to look like. :(

I asked God for forgiveness and Curt too.

The girls love vacation! The weather is nice, windy and cooler at night, but no snow!

I love comparing our vacation photos {when we go somewhere warm} from the beginning of the trip {white wisconsin family} to the end of the trip {we belong in warm weather}!

As I mentioned, the Leapster thing … brilliant! The girls played with them for almost the whole 4 plus hour flight!

Gotta love Hunter ham-it-up {in the photo above} with her sad face. She had some major tears in a few of the photos taken before this one. I was snapping away and she stopped. So I asked her to give me her sad face again.

Well, off to bed for us … we’ve been pulling some late nighters and I’ve got some sleep to catch up on! Now I just gotta get Tay off Facebook.

Today, I thought I would mention a few things I’m thankful for … but first let me tell you about my yesterday.

Curt’s work program was at 1:30, so I needed to leave work by 11:30 {bad roads!} to get home, change, get the girls ready and head out. So I got at the store about 7ish in the morning so I could accomplish the things I needed to and then get outta there for the holidays at hand! Christmas Spirit … here I come!

Hold that thought … it’ll be a while before the ol’ CS comes to town …

I won’t bore y’all with details, but I got caught up at the store making heads or tails of a lot of things and therefore wasn’t able to accomplish the ordering, etc. I intended to get done. I slowly started realizing I would need to come back to work after Curt’s program, so I called him in tears to explain {I’m a woman and I cry a lot, what can I say?} …

Anyway, 11:30 came and I had to go. Nellie was a rockstar taking over while I was gone and with some help, managed to get 27 packages out the door to UPS … thank you awesome Nellie!!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch … I got home in record time {seriously, I don’t get home that fast when the roads are clear. And I promise I was driving carefully}! I thanked the Lord and ran inside to get some kiddies ready for a Christmas program.

My mom was at the house with the girls and she and my dad were going to the program too, so she and I started getting ourselves ready. I whip on a dress {quite literally}, slap on a little more make up and try to tame my crazy hair.

Off to get the little ones ready! But not before miss teenager steps in with a potential wardrobe malfunction that needed to be taken care of. With Taylor’s outfit under control, I’m back to get the little ones ready.

I hadn’t shown them their outfits before and couldn’t wait to see how they loved them! And love they did … twirls, excitement, spelling {spelling?!?} … their shirts spelled out the word ‘joy’ and it was cute watching them figure that out.

I was able to quickly snap one photo {okay a few, but one that turned out decent. okay, decent after a little retouching in photoshop …}. I wish I had gotten a photo of Taylor, she looked beautiful and way too grown up! But of course she was putting some last minute touches on her awesome self! :)

So we all scramble to the car … seriously, the stuff reality TV is made of! We get to the program and walk in the door, start greeting people, saying our hellos when Wynter breaks down into a crying fit. ”I don’t want my skirt on!”

Blagh!!!! Things were going so well.

I start by telling her she doesn’t have a choice, it’s beautiful, it’s spinny, it’s fun, it’s … it’s … {and in my head I’m thinking, “but you match your sisters and everyone will love it and you look so cute, and, and, and …”} … “okay Wynt, you can take it off if you really want to.”

And she did. :(

When Piper sees that Wynt doesn’t have her skirt on, she wants hers off too. I realize I’m going to lose that battle, so don’t even embark … and I let her take hers off. :(

The thing is, the girls had leggings on under the skirts, that are basically made of tissue paper … point being, you can see through tissue paper … get it? We’re talking my pretty pony undies on one and bright pink on the other.

Still working on my CS here, so I’m not going to worry about an innocent little peep show!

The program starts. My awesome husband does an amazing job {am I gushing?}. Okay, time-out here … I do want to say how proud I am of him. He does such a good job with his speeches. He works so hard to practice and make them just right and he did a great job! I love him …

Then it’s time to introduce the girls … he does this every year. The girls have been practicing their songs for a few weeks now and are excited to bust ‘em out!

The following ensued …

{I downloaded this late last night and didn’t have time to ‘pretty it up’ so it’s just the raw footage, bear with me and enjoy!}

Cute, no? Wynter didn’t sing a word … she just hummed it. And Hunter started singing “O Christmas Tree” … that’s the one she’d been practicing. How cute was she holding that mic? And judging by the death grip in which she clinged to me, I think hearing her voice through the speakers freaked her out a little.

Back to my day {are you still reading?} … we stay after the program to mingle a bit and the girls were heavy on the chocolate fountain! Marta got a great photo of Wynter … I’ll share when she forwards it to me {hint, hint Marta}.

We head out a tad after 3 … get home, I run like the wind to change my clothes {did I just write ‘run like the wind?’ what is with my dorkiness these days?}, I grab a couple pretzel rods and coke for lunch and run out the door.

This time traffic wasn’t on my side and it took almost an hour to get back to the store. I’m super happy things are out the door {the 27 packages}, but somehow I still managed to stay at the store until 11:30 last night organizing, shipping more orders, and doing the ordering I wanted to get done earlier in the day. I know I stayed late, but that also meant I didn’t need to go to work today! Score one for CS!

Once again, thank you Heather for helping, thank you Nellie for staying and helping … and thank you surprise visitor for rockin’ the UPS side of things for us!! Terrie was dropping the girls off at dance and stopped in for a visit … no time for visiting, we put her to work! :)

I roll into the garage around midnight and am thoroughly exhausted … as I snuggle into bed, I smile and realize how blessed I am, and suddenly … wait … is that the CS coming upon me?

I am thankful. I have much to be thankful for.
